DEN02 Varde mega site Explore location Home atNorth data centers Denmark data centers Varde mega site Built for high-density workloads 171 hectares Campus size 500 MW Campus power capacity atNorth’s second data center campus in Denmark is a 171-hectare greenfield site located in Varde, 40km west of Billund Airport. The campus will cater to both colocation and build-to-suit projects and will be specifically designed for data-intensive businesses. With an initial capacity of 250MW, the site will have the scalability potential for several hundred additional MW, alongside implementing heat reuse to heat large scale greenhouses, local housing and opportunities for sustainable power production. DEN02 will feature best-in-class heat reuse technology and will also accommodate Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) technology to support HPC and AI workloads in an energy-efficient way. The Denmark data center market is a key part of the Nordics, one of the fastest-growing, non-FLAP regions in Europe, offering easy access to clean and low-cost power, reliable connectivity and carbon-free energy. Ølgod in Varde Municipality is on its way to bringing Denmark closer to the ambitious climate goals of full climate neutrality by 2050. To get there, Denmark must decarbonize the heat supply quickly and efficiently. District heating, which already covers about 70 percent of the Danish building stock, will be a central part of that transition – and soon the local district heating network in Ølgod will benefit directly from the surplus heat from the new atNorth data center DEN02, which is planned in the area. atNorth and Ølgod Technical Works have taken an important step towards the goal of climate neutrality with a letter of intent that paves the way for a collaboration on the reuse of surplus heat from atNorth’s future data center. The agreement reflects a shared ambition to deliver sustainable energy solutions that benefit businesses, communities and society as a whole. Read the article in Danish. How will local firms prepare for DEN02 Local companies in the Varde region are already gearing up to support the development of DEN02, with growing interest in the project and its opportunities for collaboration. Learn more about how businesses are preparing and the wider regional impact. How will DEN02 be different? Data centers produce large amounts of heat. In traditional plants, that energy is often lost to the atmosphere. atNorth is going a different way – by recycling the surplus heat. DEN02 in Ølgod will show how this can be done in practice: the heat is sent directly into the local district heating network and becomes a valuable and sustainable energy source for Ølgod Technical Works and the local community. The model is based on proven experience. atNorth has established similar partnerships in the Nordic region and shown how data centers can actively contribute to energy efficiency and system stability. The partnership between atNorth and Ølgod Technical Works is more than a technical solution. It is a strategic commitment to link data center operations directly to Denmark’s national climate agenda. It shows how innovation in one sector can accelerate progress in another – and how digital infrastructure can become a foundation for the sustainable energy system of the future. Is atNorth using this method of repurposing waste heat in other data centers? In Finland, atNorth is working with electricity distributor Caruna to power the FIN02 data center and with the retail group Kesko Corporation to reuse the surplus heat from FIN02 to heat a nearby Kesko store. The collaboration reduces the store’s CO₂ emissions by around 200 tones per year and shows how digital infrastructure can strengthen both the circular economy and energy security in local energy systems.
