Sustainability in action atNorth are committed to embedding sustainability throughout everything we do Explore our approach Home Sustainability Sustainability in action atNorth’s ambition is to build a sustainable business – one that contributes to the global economy, supports our local communities and protects our planet for generations to come. We will take measured and considered steps to achieve our goal across all levels of our operations with measured accountability, transparency and unwavering focus on sustainable business growth within the surrounding community and environment. How will we achieve this? Green energy atNorth is strategically working to minimize the impact of digitalization on our planet. atNorth’s Nordic locations ensure that all our sites are powered by low-carbon and renewable energy sources, and the cooler consistent climate enables us to support more efficient cooling requirements at our data centers in a sustainable manner. View our sustainability report Sustainable materials Across our sites, we prioritize the use and reuse of materials with lower carbon footprints in our buildings, such as the use of glulam, a natural structural material that can be used as an alternative to steel or concrete. Glulam is made with wood from sustainable forests where the manufacture, distribution and treatment all consume less energy than other building materials. View our sustainability report Waste heat re-purposed By feeding excess heat from data centers into city heating networks, we can heat or power other facilities in the community and you can lower your net CO2 footprint. We are also working towards reusing the excess heat from our mega campus sites for use in large scale greenhouses for vegetable production. Watch video Empowering the community Contributing to the local community is important to us and we allocate funds annually to support a variety of community projects in all our locations. Emphasis is placed on selecting projects that focus on innovation in the energy and technology sector, prevention activities, supporting marginal groups and the protection of the environment. View our sustainability report “The two defining trends of our time — digitalization and sustainability — meet in the data center. Its where digital transformation meets the climate crisis head on. Every time consumers go online - whether to bank, shop or stream a TV series - a process starts in a data center. If this data center is power hungry, coal fired, energy inefficient and lets excess heat into the atmosphere - then we are all, as consumers, contributing to climate change, albeit most likely unknowingly.” Chapter author of Greener Data Volume 2, an Amazon Best Seller: Fredrik Jansson, CSMO, atNorth Policies and procedures atNorth’s policies and procedures ensure that our company rules, standards, values, culture and benefits are clearly outlined. How does atNorth minimize the environmental impact of digitalization? atNorth is strategically working to minimize the impact of digitalization on our planet. atNorth’s Nordic locations ensure that all our sites are powered renewable energy sources, and the cooler consistent climate enables us to support more efficient cooling requirements at our data centers in a sustainable manner. Does atNorth’s use of Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) technology improve data center efficiency and performance? all atNorth facilities will be liquid cooling ready. Direct liquid (DLC) cooling technology uses less water than air-cooled systems to keep servers cool because liquid is a more efficient circulator of heat. This combined approach of using DLC and warm water decreases the dependence on fans and expensive air handling systems to cool data center halls, which ultimately results in higher rack density, overall reduced power usage and significantly advanced performance.
