June 2026 A tribute to the communities quietly enabling the world we rely on every day Blog Community Home Insights Blog A tribute to the communities quietly enabling the world we rely on every day By Linda Rabete, Community Engagement Manager, atNorth Imagine a world without data centers. No streaming services. No online banking. No cloud storage quietly backing up your photos. Much of modern healthcare, logistics, and everyday communication would simply not function as they do today. It’s a useful experiment because it highlights what we often take for granted: the digital infrastructure underpinning nearly every aspect of modern life. At atNorth, we see data centers not just as buildings, but as the quiet enablers of how we live, work and connect as a critical foundation for society – one that must be built to be dependable, adaptable, and responsible from the ground up. It takes a village In conversations about digital infrastructure, we often overlook a crucial factor: the network of organizations that make it all possible. Behind every data center is a broader ecosystem of energy providers, municipalities, contractors, educators, and local communities that enable digital infrastructure to operate and grow. For atNorth, these relationships are fundamental to how we design, scale, and integrate our facilities. When done responsibly, the impact of a data center extends far beyond the building itself, creating long-term social and economic value for the surrounding community. Let’s zoom in and explore how data centers truly shape and support the communities around them. A boost to the local economy The presence of data centers brings significant investment. Local amenities, suppliers, contractors, and service providers all benefit, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community and helps investment stay rooted in the local economy. New jobs, and new skills From technicians and engineers to office managers and cleaning services, data centers create a range of job opportunities. atNorth prioritizes hiring locally, engaging with education providers and supporting skills development to help build the next generation of data center talent. For example, in Denmark, atNorth donated equipment such as 3D printers to give students hands-on access to emerging technologies and in Iceland, atNorth donated advanced mechatronics equipment to the Vocational College of Akureyri to help train students and residents for data center–related careers. Stronger infrastructure for everyone Reliable power, better connectivity, and upgraded infrastructure are essential for data centers, but they also benefit residents and businesses. What’s built for one often becomes a shared advantage for many. This is particularly relevant in regions where resilient, high-quality infrastructure can support both digital growth and broader economic development. Supporting public services through tax revenue With increased economic activity comes increased tax income. This can translate to better schools, improved healthcare, and stronger public services – things that shape everyday life in meaningful ways. A catalyst for innovation By attracting digital businesses and enabling AI, cloud, and high-performance computing workloads, data centers can also support broader regional innovation and digital transformation. A partner in sustainability Modern data centers are increasingly designed around sustainability principles, from renewable energy use to innovations such as heat reuse. At atNorth, sustainability is integrated into facility design from the start. Sites such as DEN02 in Denmark illustrate this broader design philosophy: building infrastructure that works in harmony with its surroundings, rather than placing additional strain on them. Social engagement Data centers can also benefit local communities through social and charitable activities. atNorth, for example, champions a number of initiatives, from funding swimming lessons for children, sponsoring cultural festivals, local sports teams, donations to Icelandic search and rescue volunteers and nature restoration initiatives. Building alongside communities is key The European Commission has emphasized the need for sustainable, energy-efficient digital infrastructure, as part of Europe’s green and digital transition. Delivering on these ambitions will require close collaboration between all stakeholders – from data center operators, energy providers, and businesses to municipalities and local communities to ensure everyone benefits equally and responsibly. But our role does not stop at infrastructure. By supporting local engagement initiatives and contributing to community programs, we aim to help strengthen social cohesion. It’s a reminder that growth, responsibility, and community can go hand in hand. atNorth’s data centers are not just hosts to infrastructure; they are active enablers of a more connected, resilient, and sustainable future. And it’s the communities – the quiet heroes behind the scenes – that make so much of this possible. That is something worth recognizing, not just in reflection, but in how we continue to build for what comes next. Share
